Week 5: Assignments

Please complete by the start of class on Tuesday, Feb. 18:

  1. Here are two websites, randomly selected from the students in this course. Go to the website and give feedback on the post about the “Five Phases,” or the “survival guide” (week 4).
            • If one of the website shown below is your own, or it is twice the same site, refresh the page, and you should get new sites; if there is no post for week 4, come back here and refresh to get a new site.
            • Use the hypothes.is add-on in your browser to give feedback to the post in the group HST107. Remember the Architect’s model of giving feedback! Be kind, be specific, and provide concrete suggestions for improvement.
            • Website 1:
            • Website 2:
            • You can provide feedback to as many websites/blogs as you like, of course!
            • Don’t forget to check on your own posts what the comments are from the group HST107; you can rewrite your posts and improve them (incl. adding links or pictures) anytime through the semester.
  2. Writing exercise: Write a summary of one of the biographies from “Doctors, Diviners, and Magicians” translations (PDF) in 300 words or fewer, while maintaining the key take-aways of the story.
        • Why? In the textbook chapter you may have to summarize long stories in a few paragraphs, so the reader of your chapter will understand the story in the context of the ideas you are discussing.
        • Post your exercise to your website, in the category HST107, and include at the bottom the references to the texts you used to inspire you, in Chicago Notes+Bibliography style.
              • “Doctors, Diviners and Magicians”. In An Anthology of Translations: Classical Chinese Literature, Vol. 1: From Antiquity to the Tang Dynasty. Edited by John Minford and Joseph S. M. Lau, 359-370. New York: Hong Kong: Columbia University Press; The Chinese University Press, 2000.
        • Include the word Biography in the title of your post.
  3.  Make sure you finished the first larger self-reflection (was due on Thu. Feb. 13, see item 3 in week 4’s assignments)
  4. Check in on the Pad to see if there are questions you can answer, or want to add.

Then head on over to Canvas and fill out the Declaration quiz.
