Week 1 (Aug. 29 – Sept. 4)

Unless otherwise noted, all assignments and tasks are due by 11:59PM. I strongly suggest you keep a healthy life-work balance and make sure to get enough sleep. Check the “best-before dates” policy in the syllabus.

Monday
Tuesday
  • □ Prepare before class:
    • – Browse through our course textbook China’s Magical Creatures (and where to find them)
    • – Identify the topics that speak to you, think about ways you would like to improve the existing textbook (content, study-aids,…) I have ideas, but I’m sure you do too! Take notes, in case we don’t get to this part.
  • □ Meeting in Ettinger 204, 3.30PM
    • – Bring your curiosity and an open mind!
    • – Slides
Wednesday
  • □ Create your Bergbuilds Website and create your first post, using these instructions: https://tdh.bergbuilds.domains/first-post-2/
  • □ Remember to email me the link to your blog, or I don’t know where it lives. The internet is a big place!
Thursday
  • □ Prepare before class:
    • – Fill out and bring to class or email/share the Start of Term reflection (15-20min)
    • – Watch the documentary/lecture “Chinese Heroes, Kings and Destroyers” (Panopto link, 25 min)
    • – Take notes and bring to class for discussion: what are the big takeaways? What additional information would you need to explain this topic clearly to another student? How much did you learn about Chinese history, geography, etc?
  • □ Meeting in Ettinger 204, 3.30PM
  • – Slides
Friday
  • □ Add yourself to the Discord Server Dr. D’s Spring 2022 classes. Please follow these instructions. (Google doc link)
  • □ I’ll add you to the right role as soon as I can, and you will see your additional course channels (text and voice) activate as soon as I do. If that does not happen within 24hrs of you joining the server: email me to remind me. (Thanks!)
  • □ In the Text channel #hst107, add an image that is meaningful to you, and that you’d like to share with the class (can be picture of you/family/holiday/pet, but also art work, object,…). Add your preferred name to address you in class. (I know nobody is Lord Buckethead, he’s in the UK and not signed up at the College!) Explain why the image is meaningful, and anything else you’d like us to know at the start of this semester.
  • □ Say hello to your new classmates! Pop back in on the channel later in the day/weekend/next week, make yourself comfy and chat away 😀 Hop into the Tea Room anytime, it’s your space to hang out via video.
  • □ You can also visit and post in the #off-topic-chat room and share things with students from my other courses, such as upcoming games, performances, etc.
Saturday
  • □ Take a day off! Rest is important.
Sunday
  • □ No Weekly Progress report due this week, but you are always invited to write a blog post about how the course is going, or about anything cool you found that is connected to the course. (Remember to add it to Category HST107 so I can find it easily.)
  • □ Check you have done all the tasks that were due this week, and keep an eye open for the announcement that the schedule for week 2 is available.
