Week 3: Assignments

Please complete your assignments connected to week 3 by the start of class on Tuesday, Feb. 4.

    1. Here are two websites, randomly selected from the students in this course. Go to the website and give feedback on the post about the “Tribute of Yu”.
              • If one of the website shown below is your own, or it is twice the same site, refresh the page, and you should get new sites.
              • Use the hypothes.is add-on in your browser to give feedback to the post in the group HST107. Remember the Architect’s model of giving feedback! Be kind, be specific, and provide concrete suggestions for improvement.
              • Website 1:
              • Website 2:
              • You can provide feedback to as many websites/blogs as you like, of course!
              • Don’t forget to check on your own posts what the comments are from the group HST107; you can rewrite your posts and improve them (adding links or pictures) anytime through the semester.
    2. You have a choice of topic, but both will practice the same skill: Pick either Oracle Bones OR Classic of Mountains and Seas. If you prefer, you can also upload a voice-recording or a video.
            • Write in one post two brief introductions (each is 1-2 paragraphs each) to share with two different imaginary readers:
                  • Version 1: Imagine one of your fellow students has missed Thursday’s class: how would you explain to them what this topic or text is?
                  • Version 2: How would you explain what this topic or text is to somebody who is not in this course at all? (For instance: your roommate, or a good friend from your FYS.)
                  • Why? Writing/talking is communicating ideas, but you need to adjust the information, tone and context you provide to your reader or audience. With two different target readers in mind, you should end up with two subtly different ways of introducing the Classic.
                  • Add your post to category HST107.
                  • Use the word “Introduction” in the title of your post
    3. Then go to Canvas and fill out the Quiz with the declaration.
    4. Optional extra, in view of the Lunar New Year (January 25): “Little Door Gods”  (Xiao menshen 小門神, Youtube link), an animation film about two brothers who are door gods. When one of them decides to make himself relevant again, all hell breaks loose. The film draws on a lot of common cultural practices and beliefs, and you’ll see connections with what we cover this semester! This version is in Mandarin with English subtitles.
